The competition is held every four years. Skippers need to set sail alone from Les Sables Dounes in Vendée, France, passing through the African coast, Cape of Good Hope, the Antarctic continent, crossing Cape Horn and the South American coast, and finally returning to France, covering a total distance of over 26,000 nautical miles (48,000 kilometers).
As of July 2024, only 84 skippers worldwide have accomplished this feat, which is known as the 'Everest of the maritime world'.
The significance of participating in the competition is not to compete with opponents, but to explore the limits of humanity, test the most advanced technology, and collect natural data from uninhabited areas. Therefore, it has a significant contribution and significance in promoting the development of multiple fields such as ocean technology, meteorological observation, sports physiology and psychology, shipbuilding technology, etc.
For the 2024 edition, Chinese one armed skipper Xu Jingkun will participate in the competition by piloting the all carbon fiber monocoque sailing boat "Haikou". This is also the first time for a Chinese skipper to set sail in Vendée Global.
In support of Xu Jingkun to complete the race, Shanghai Cedar Carbon Fiber Technology Co., Ltd. has customized and developed bracket components for hydraulic generator made with carbon fiber.
The bracket components are located on the side of the sailboat, subject to long-term wave impact and other harsh service environment. As a result, the tress condition is complex. In addition, walls of the component is relatively thin with short hole-to-edge distance, and are made with traditional molding processes, thus leading easily lead to failure therein.
To find a solution, Cedar optimized the fiber placement path based on the stress situation with the support of updated CAE software. Holes are avoided during fiber placement to maintain the continuity of carbon fibers there around, improving the structural strength and fatigue-resistance. Finally, the liquid forming process is adopted to complete the integrated molding of the bracket components.
Compared with traditional forming processes, the new process has the following advantages: (1) maintaining the continuity of carbon fibers around the hole, allowing outstanding structural strength and fatigue resistance performance; (2) Optimizing the fiber placement path to increase utilization efficiency of carbon fiber; (3) The fiber angle can be adjusted, making the product more designable; (4) Higher production efficiency.
