The total value of exported carbon fiber in December rose to $13 million, up from $7.47 million in October, which was even less than half of the $16.68 million in the same period last year.


HS Hyosung introduced its high-strength carbon fiber brand "TANSOME®" in 2011, whose weight is only a quarter of iron, but strength boasts ten times of the latter. However, the company still faced major challenges in spite of such advancement, owing to fierce competition from Chinese competitors.

The rapid rebound of carbon fiber export in the fourth quarter of 2024 is mainly attributed to China's active expansion of carbon fiber production capacity at home, and the adjustment of the production volume of some low-profit products. Such adjustment helped to recapture the market once lost owing to China’s fierce price war.

"With the slowdown of China’s expansion in carbon fiber capacity and the operation started in Hyosung’s Vietnam new factory since the second quarter of 2024, the profitability of HS Hyosung is gradually recovered.” An industrial official stated, "As HS Hyosung’s capacity gradually rises to 21,500 tons, the market share of China’s carbon fiber will drop accordingly, with market influence diminished.”

The super fiber division of HS Hyosung Advanced Materials recorded an operating loss of KRW 13.8 billion in the third quarter of last year. In addition, industry observers predicted that the division will also incur a loss of 12.9 billion Korean won in the fourth quarter. Despite these losses, it is believed that HS Hyosung’s profitability will recover this year as new factories in Vietnam begin operation.
