To effectively prevent damage to oil and gas facilities from fishing operations and avoid the economic losses and environmental damage caused by potential oil and gas leaks, the "Research on Composite Protective Covers for Offshore Oil and Gas Facilities" project undertaken by Beijing FRP Institute Composite Materials Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Sinoma Science & Technology Co., Ltd., has recently passed its final acceptance review.
The "Marine Glass Fiber Protective Composite Material" and "Marine Glass Fiber Sandwich Composite Material" developed in the project have been appraised by the China Composites Industry Association as new products reaching "internationally leading" standards, and have been successfully included in CNOOC Group's promotion catalog of new technologies and products.
The product system has completed the optimization from conceptual prototype to modular product design. Through advanced finite element analysis, the products have been verified to meet stringent marine operational load requirements including dropped object impact (target energy: 50 kJ), fishing net dragging, lifting, transportation, and in-situ stability.
Based on vacuum assisted resin infusion molding process and combining experimental research with finite element simulation, the project developed production equipment for the protective system, optimized molding die design, and developed connection technology between metal frameworks and composite surfaces, thereby enhancing dimensional stability and airtightness.
The project established an internationally advanced performance evaluation system for composite protective covers. It successfully completed key verifications including: study on long-term seawater corrosion behavior and performance prediction of composite materials, high-energy dropped object impact testing, fishing net dragging testing, and lifting testing, providing solid assurance for product reliability.
The project achievements have realized localization and industrial application, establishing a demonstration production line with an annual capacity of 5,000 m² for composite protective covers. A series of protective cover products have been successfully developed covering various application scenarios including pipeline end terminals, hoses, pipe heads, and pipelines. The product series has successfully obtained certifications from international and domestic authoritative classification societies such as Lloyd's Register (LR) and China Classification Society (CCS), and has been implemented in engineering applications in several important offshore oil and gas fields including Lufeng, Xijiang, and Huizhou in the South China Sea.
