LUOYANG, April 17, 2026 - CSSC SunRui Marine Environment Engineering Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of the 725th Research Institute of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), officially unveiled the world's largest marine Wind-Assisted Propulsion System (WAPS). The system has successfully completed full-scale, full-condition land-based testing, providing a critical boost to the shipping industry's journey toward a zero-carbon future.

Against the backdrop of increasingly stringent global shipping emission regulations and an urgent industry-wide need for low-carbon transition, wind-assisted propulsion technology has emerged as a key option for shipowners seeking regulatory compliance, cost reduction, and efficiency gains, thanks to its immediate carbon-reduction benefits and economic advantages.

The newly unveiled rotor sail system measures 5 meters in diameter and 35 meters in height, making it the largest rotor sail system globally to have completed land-based testing. Leveraging the classical Magnus effect, the system efficiently captures wind energy during navigation to provide additional thrust for vessels. On average, it can reduce fuel consumption for large ocean-going ships by 5% to 25%, with corresponding cuts in carbon emissions. This helps shipowners meet regulatory requirements from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), delivering outstanding both environmental and economic performance.

The project team has surmounted a series of engineering challenges, including the manufacturing of giant composite structures, vibration control of ultra-large systems, complex system integration, and intelligent coordinated control. Among these, the independently developed "two-piece vacuum infusion molding" process - compared to mainstream international technical pathways - offers greater production efficiency and cost advantages while maintaining high performance and lightweight characteristics (total system weight ≤60 tons). The intelligent control system automatically optimizes operation based on real-time wind conditions and vessel status, ensuring both efficiency and safety. Test data show that the system delivers a maximum thrust exceeding 355 kN, achieving performance indicators that reach internationally leading levels.

At the concurrent "Green Decarbonization Technology Seminar" and product launch event, multiple internationally recognized classification societies - including ABS, BV, CCS, and DNV — issued type approval certificates for the product, laying the foundation for its large-scale global application. Additionally, CSSC SunRui signed a cooperation agreement with Dalian Haineng on-site, accelerating the commercial deployment of this technology.
