The world's maiden 100kW bamboo‑based offshore photovoltaic (PV) platform, “Jilin No.2”, has been delivered and commissioned in Yantai, Shandong Province. With an installed capacity of 100 kW, the platform innovatively employs bamboo-wound composite technology to replace conventional steel structures and plastic floatation bodies. Its outer structural components adopt E7 high-modulus glass fiber produced by China Jushi, offering a robust technical solution for the manufacturing of eco-friendly marine engineering equipment.

Traditional offshore PV platforms mostly utilise steel structures or high-density polyethylene (HDPE), a thermoplastic, as floatation units. Steel boasts high strength yet carries considerable deadweight and incurs high corrosion-protection costs. While HDPE floats are lightweight, long-term ageing resistance and recyclability remain enduring challenges. Bamboo-based composites present a third viable route, featuring renewability, low mass and saline-alkali tolerance.

The key bottleneck preventing bamboo composites from wider marine engineering adoption is that ordinary bamboo and timber cannot endure harsh marine environments.

Jushi's E7 glass fiber delivers a modulus above 90 GPa, coupled with high tensile strength, corrosion resistance and excellent weatherability. E7-reinforced composites exhibit superior mechanical performance to resolve critical industry pain points. The E7-strengthened bamboo structure enables the offshore PV platform to withstand high humidity, heavy salt spray, aggressive corrosion and intense ultraviolet exposure. It also alleviates fatigue loads triggered by wave impacts and preserves the platform's structural safety.

Scaled to the 100kW class, "Jilin No.2" features expanded overall dimensions and bearing areas, imposing more stringent requirements on material performance.

Test results indicate the platform achieves flexural strength exceeding 160 MPa, meeting the performance threshold for engineered structural materials, and can withstand wave surges of 5–6 meters. Serving as a demonstration project that combines advanced new materials with offshore renewable energy, it will supply consistent clean power for local operations. The launch signals that bamboo-based marine materials have entered a new era of scaled and standardised deployment within offshore photovoltaics.

China holds massive development potential for floating offshore PV, alongside growing markets for marine ranches, offshore energy platforms and marine ecological initiatives. Faced with this high-growth blue market, China Jushi will remain anchored on the wind-solar-hydrogen-storage new-energy track, delivering premium solutions for low-carbon marine energy development through high-performance fiber products.
