Shanghai, China — SABIC, a global leader in diversified chemicals, has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Anhui Chiyu New Material Technology Co., Ltd. to jointly drive the commercial adoption of PP long-glass-fiber flame-retardant (LGF-PP FR) materials in battery enclosure systems. The collaboration aims to achieve a weight reduction of over 20% and cost optimization of approximately 15%, while striking a balanced performance profile across safety, lightweighting, and engineering compatibility—delivering tangible benefits for the new-energy vehicle (NEV) and energy storage sectors.

The LGF-PP FR material is a high-performance engineered composite based on a polypropylene matrix, reinforced with 10–25 mm long glass fibers and compounded with a halogen-free flame-retardant system. Its key attributes include:
- Superior mechanical performance – The long glass fibers form a three-dimensional network reinforcement within the matrix, endowing the material with exceptional strength, stiffness, and dimensional stability. Impact and creep resistance are far superior to those of short-glass-fiber reinforced polypropylene.
- High flame retardancy – The material achieves a UL94 V-0 rating and is self-extinguishing upon removal from an open flame, meeting the stringent thermal-runaway protection requirements of battery enclosures.
- Remarkable lightweighting potential – With a density of approximately 1.2 g/cm³—only 45% that of aluminum alloys and 15% that of conventional carbon steel—the material also offers excellent chemical resistance, ease of processing, and cost-effectiveness. It is widely applied in traction battery enclosures, battery trays, energy storage equipment housings, automotive electronics, and various electrical components.
Anhui Chiyu New Material Technology Co., Ltd., established in February 2021 with a registered capital of RMB 200 million, specializes in the R&D and manufacturing of critical components for NEV power battery systems. Its core product portfolio includes battery trays, composite battery upper covers, aluminum-alloy battery enclosures, and interior and exterior automotive trim parts. The company has built a comprehensive in-house manufacturing capability spanning molding, surface finishing, and final assembly and inspection for battery enclosure systems.
