On September 18, Huierjie New Material Technology Co., Ltd.‌ (“Huierjie”) officially commissioned its industrialized basalt fiber composite core yarn project at an ignition ceremony. Upon full operation, the project will add 3,000 tonnes of annual capacity for basalt fiber composite core yarn, raising Huierjie’s total annual output to 5,000 tonnes and driving accelerated, high-quality development of the basalt fiber industry.

As an inorganic high-performance fiber, basalt fiber offers unique benefits across specialty protection, new-energy battery thermal shielding, electronic fabrics, transportation, construction and composite reinforcement. Drawing on its accumulated manufacturing datasets, Huierjie has established a complete set of industrial production technologies for composite core yarn through iterative optimization of raw material formulations, melting temperatures and fining mechanisms.

The facility adopts cutting-edge technologies: single-furnace multi-line layout, oxy-fuel combustion, and hybrid heating combining natural gas and electric boosting. These innovations deliver superior product consistency while slashing energy use. Its comprehensive energy consumption reaches merely 0.70 tonnes of standard coal per tonne of yarn, surpassing conventional basalt tank furnaces that normally consume over 1.0 tonne of standard coal per tonne of yarn.

Huierjie’s basalt fiber manufacturing capabilities have been verified by major national projects. In June 2024, a five-star red flag fabricated from basalt fiber onboard the Chang’e‑6 lander was successfully deployed on the far side of the Moon. Known as the “rock flag”, it was developed over nearly four years by a team led by Academician Xu Weilin, Party Secretary of Wuhan Textile University, in partnership with Huierjie and other institutions. The team conquered worldwide technical hurdles in ultra-fine basalt fiber spinning, yarn formation, weaving and color construction, enabling autonomous dynamic display without thermal control. The related spinning technology received the 2025 Science and Technology Progress Award from the China National Textile and Apparel Council and achieves internationally leading levels.
