Sichuan Basalt Fiber Institute Launches Independently Developed Deep-Sea Aquaculture Platform in Hainan

The platform was independently developed and manufactured by the Sichuan Basalt Fiber New Materials Research Institute (SBFN).


The multifunctional structure integrates offshore energy supply, deep-sea aquaculture, and marine tourism. With a total weight of around 50 tons, it features a modular main framework that was prefabricated in Sichuan and assembled in Hainan before launch. It is now operational for deep-sea aquaculture activities.

Growing demand for high-quality deep-sea fish, driven by rising living standards, has intensified the need for expanded aquaculture capacity. Against the constraints of limited land and coastal farming space, deep-sea aquaculture represents a strategic pathway for China to develop its “blue granary” and enhance marine food production.

Most existing deep-sea aquaculture facilities worldwide are built with metal, which faces severe corrosion in high-salinity, humid marine environments, often requiring protective coatings to extend service life.

Basalt fiber, a high-performance green material sourced from volcanic rock, offers exceptional corrosion resistance, high strength, and durability against aging and oxidation. Laboratory simulations and mechanical tests, including bending and tensile assessments, confirm that the platform can withstand extreme conditions such as Category 17 typhoons. Its designed service life exceeds 30 years with minimal maintenance.
